If you're looking forward to buying traditional Indian clothing, especially saris, CHENNAI has a variety of stores all across the city. Besides there are also a few upscale malls where you can splurge on a wide range of branded stuff. The festival season of Diwali (Oct-Nov) and Pongal (Jan 14) are the busiest.
If you're short on time, then I'd recommend just 3 Top Places in CHENNAI to Shop as well as experience the city's shopping culture.
#1 Pondy bazar, T.Nagar
Is the busiest shopping destination in CHENNAI. A week before Diwali & Pongal it's so crowded that it's common to see people shuffling their way through.
What to expect~
Saris, Veshtis, dhotis, salwar kameez sets, gold and imitation jewelry and accessories like footwear, bags, purses, bangles etc. Besides, one can get Indian wedding outfits like lehengas and kurtas for men.
Another nice thing about Pondy bazar is the scores of tailors available here, who do sari fall, beading and stitch blouses within a couple of hours.
TamilNadu's reputed clothing brands for saris and traditional clothing, such as; Nallis, Pothy's, Sundari silks etc~ all have their stores at Pondy bazar.
Tip~ Festival season is usually when there are SALES & stores give huge discounts.
Obviously there's a high demand for saris during the wedding season too. A good silk sari with zari (gold thread) can cost a minimum 8k-10k INR. But if you're not so particular there are a myriad options of inexpensive but beautiful saris that look and feel rich.

You can also shop for jewelry and accessories to go with your new wardrobe. Again all top branded footwear stores are out here. Check out the street shopping scene~ it's a real mela (fair) with an excellent variety of handbags, junk jewelry and other such ornamental stuff.

#2 Sowcarpet, Broadway
What to expect~
Sowcarpet is a mish mash of just about everything and nothing in particular. It has fewer upscale stores compared to Pondy bazar.
The Flower Bazar lane has rows of shops selling fresh flowers. The sight of flowers 🌸 always brings joy, but I can't say the same for the unkempt street.

Tip~ The lanes and bylanes of Sowcarpet bazar are quite dusty and can get rather overwhelming. So browse through only as long as you can.

If you enjoy shopping in style and comfort then don't settle for anything less than two of Chennai's best luxury Malls~
Express Avenue, Opp.Spencers plaza (North Chennai)
