A Journey across India: The call to Adventure

An easy, practical and in-sequence itinerary planner I have travelled the length and breadth of India, and am truly proud of its rich and varied heritage. I am amazed by the tradition and values, the people, festivals, celebrations and the changing landscape. Have you wondered if it's possible to travel across India completely? Most foreigners arriving in India, land in Delhi and then travel the Golden Triangle route first- which is a good decision incase you have limited time at hand and want to make the most of it. The Golden Triangle- Delhi, Agra and Jaipur includes the much hyped Taj Mahal which invariably is part of a tourist's bucket list. This blog on the other hand- is a sequential strategy and detailed 'been there done that' itinerary plan starting from Mumbai. I am sure as we go through this Journey you will understand India better. My experiences are based from the perspective of a - digital nomad, budget backpacker and from a local standpoint. Menezes Braganza house, Chandor: A Portuguese Goa Heritage trail

Chandor is a village in South Goa, 10 km away from MARGAO; almost off-the-beaten track but historically significant nevertheless. It was the first capital of the KADAMBA dynasty that ruled Goa before the Portuguese arrived.

The Portuguese State of Goa was established on 1 Dec 1510, thus changing How goans lived during the Portuguese Rule. The Dessais are traditionally goan Brahmins and like the vast majority of natives, the Chandor Desais too were Hindus. Christian conversion was catching on rapidly, and by 1542 with the coming of Saint Francis Xavier (a Jesuit missionary), followed by The Inquisition thereafter, they too felt the heat and subsequently converted to Christianity.

About Menezes-Braganza-Pereira family

This is presently the 15th generation of Menezes - Braganza - Pereira. The family is big-hearted enough to allow people a tour. Also gracious enough to walk you through their family history and this exquisite home. They do have a charge, which is fine since maintaining this incredible property at their own capability is no easy task.

About Menezes - Braganza - Pereira mansion

Even though people refer to it as 'house', it is actually a luxurious 17th century (ie 450 years old) Portuguese style mansion located in a village named Chandor. Stepping into this mansion is like stepping into another era.

'This certainly was no ordinary goan' is the first impression I had. Ashley, a family member explained that (Antonio) A.F.S. Braganza Pereira was a person of high stature and represented the Portuguese government in Goa as the vice-consul general of Spain. It was during his lifetime that the house was built and was further renovated in the years that followed.

The signs of European aristocracy are indeed clearly visible starting from~

The family crest at the entrance presented by none other than the King of Portugal, Dom Luis, an honor for their dedication to the Portuguese government.

They truly lived the aristocratic lifestyle and had at least 12 orderly staff such as maids, cooks, butlers, gardeners etc.

The mansion is large with an impressive façade and said to be the biggest Portuguese mansion of its kind in Goa. There is a garden throughout the length of the facade with mosaic seats and a fountain.

One can imagine what grand parties they held here, looking at the opulence of the ballroom.

Even the artifacts are carefully selected, like a tray of oyster shells, porcelain jars from Macau etc.. If you are an antique aficionado, then this house is a treasure chest.

Interestingly, the mansion also has its very own family chapel where a priest could hear confession and serve mass. According to Ashley, St Francis Xavier's fingernail is preserved in the altar.
