An easy, practical and in-sequence itinerary planner I have travelled the length and breadth of India, and am truly proud of its rich and varied heritage. I am amazed by the tradition and values, the people, festivals, celebrations and the changing landscape. Have you wondered if it's possible to travel across India completely? Most foreigners arriving in India, land in Delhi and then travel the Golden Triangle route first- which is a good decision incase you have limited time at hand and want to make the most of it. The Golden Triangle- Delhi, Agra and Jaipur includes the much hyped Taj Mahal which invariably is part of a tourist's bucket list. This blog on the other hand- is a sequential strategy and detailed 'been there done that' itinerary plan starting from Mumbai. I am sure as we go through this Journey you will understand India better. My experiences are based from the perspective of a - digital nomad, budget backpacker and from a local standpoint. Kalimpong is a tiny hill-station nestled within Darjeeling & surrounded by the majestic Himalayan range. Here is a 3 days itinerary incase you visit Kalimpong, and I have focused only on places worth visiting.
Basic info on Kalimpong
How do I plan a Kalimpong tour? Do I need to hire a cab and how much will it cost?
You can follow this simple no hassle 3 day itinerary and explore Kalimpong on your own.
How can I travel to Kalimpong?
Kalimpong is less than 3 hours from & well-connected to Siliguri (West Bengal). Plenty of share cab and sumos leave Siliguri throughout the day for Kalimpong and they charge apprx Rs.300/ pp. Govt. buses charge Rs.110/ both take same time. The choice is yours.
Incase you are coming from Kolkata, it's better to take an overnight train to Siliguri and then head to Kalimpong.
The Darjeeling Mountain toy train ride is most definitely an experience. Since Darjeeling is a mountainous region, landslides are common especially during rainy season. Regarding road conditions do check with the Siliguri State Transport bus stand as they are likely to provide a more unbiased info, also check thisKalimpong police facebook page it might be helpful. Being the road to Sikkim and border areas, you will find a lot military movement on this route.
When is the best time to visit Kalimpong?
If you wish to beat the summer heat, then you need to head to the hills of Kalimpong. The climate is just perfect to soothe the soul.
Day 1- As you start your journey from Siliguri; within 30 mins enroute is the Kali mandir. Do ask your driver to stop at Sevok Kalibari. If you are traveling by public transport you will need to break your journey here and wait for next bus/ sumo heading to Kalimpong. Right opp. the kali mandir is the Coronation bridge at Sevok. The location is rustic, and a great way to enjoy some peace and serenity.
Where can I stay in Kalimpong?
Kalimpong is one of the top hillstations in Darjeeling and you will find plenty of resorts, homestays and hotels in the range of Rs.1000/ and even some budget stay options in the range of ₹500/ nearby Kalimpong bus-taxj stand. You can also book directly upon reaching Kalimpong.
Next is to find a decent meal. Kalimpong has a few decent chinese restaurants which are good.
Post lunch set out to explore -
(a) Tongsa Gumba(b) Mother of God church opp the Tongsa gumba and (c) explore the market area, which is quite lively. Also these places are short distances from the main town area can be done by foot within 2 -3 kms. There is also a temple enroute. (d) Shopping - buy some Darjeeling tea. I think it's totally refreshing & worth it.
Day 2- You will need a vehicle, and although it seems like a short distance, it's not. I made this mistake and decided to walk, but the uphill winding roads just seemed to go on and on, until I found a kind local biker who showed me these places. So head to the taxi stand. Anything apprx Rs.1000/- for the day is decent deal.
Day 2 Kalimpong itinerary
(a) Army golf course (b) viewpoint opp military hospital (locals call it suicide point (c) opp. Durpin viewpoint is the 'Teesta rivier viewpoint.
Day 3-(a) Deola park- is a nice place for strolling around especially with kids. it has a viewpoint from where you can get a glimpse of the Kanchenjunga (tip), and a bit of the range on a clear day. The Science center close by was closed due to covid. Local buses from taxi stand go straight to Deolo park, costs less than Rs.50/ pp.
The best part of my Kalimpong trip - Is the downhill (about 2 hours) hike from Deolo park (via. Dr. Graham's home) till Kalimpong. It will surely take to back in time !
If you found this itinerary useful do comment below and let me know, perhaps I could have added some places, or skipped something.
The best 10 day tour package is : KALIMPONG 3 Days, PEDONG3 Days return Kalimpong, and then head to GANGTOK, SIKKIM4 Days. Since all fall in the same route, it's cost-effective, time-saving and less tiring!
